The piano is an excellent first choice, because a tuner sets the instrument up for correct pitch so that all the child needs to do is press the right key to obtain the correct tone. This provides valuable ear training that carries over to mastery of other instruments in the future. The piano offers the broadest ranges of both pitch and dynamics. The young pianist obtains early exposure to musical theory as he or she learns to play both melody and accompaniment.
Parents may wonder when to begin lessons. They should consider these factors, which differ for every child:
- Does the child already show interest in music by singing?
- Are the child’s hands big enough to span five white keys on a standard piano keyboard?
- Does the child have sufficient dexterity to move the fingers independently?
- Will the child sit with a teacher for at least 15 minutes and follow verbal instructions?

Before piano classes begin, you may ask the instructor about daily practice requirements, curriculum and teaching methods. Look for a balance of music that will appeal to the child and gradual introduction of scales and exercises. For a shy child, you may want to wait a few years before placing them in a recital. Your initial goal should be to foster a child’s personal joy in making music.
Your teacher will let you know when to buy a metronome as well as what music books you need to purchase. Children enjoy having a special music bag to hold their lesson materials if the lessons take place outside the home.
Starting at the right time with the right teacher sets your child up for piano mastery, provides skills that carry over into academic work, and a fosters a lifelong love of music.
